PROJECT NORTH UPDATE
Date Posted: September 6, 2009
Photographer: Michelle Valberg
I am once again overwhelmed by our community's generosity. Project North began with Adventure Canada agreeing to ship extra cargo for us. Now Project North has exceeded all our expectations. Joan and I thought if we got a few boxes of equipment to bring up with us, that would be awesome. Now, we have far more than we ever thought.
The drop off deadline is September 11th so we don't know the full scale of equipment we will receive. We do however know of a few generous contributions that have already been made.
Here is a brief update... Scotiabank donated $4000 to buy brand new skates at less than cost value. Kiwanis Club of Manotick has given $2000 to add to that purchase of skates. Bell Capital Cup have 5 bags of hockey equipment with more to come. Ottawa 67s donated boxes of hockey gear. The Toronto Blue Jays have donated boxes of baseballs and gloves. United Way have 25 boxes of equipment. Carleton Raven Basketball Team donated 40 new pairs of sneakers. Queen's University have donated hockey sticks, jerseys and lacrosse sticks. All this doesn't even include what was dropped off at Valberg Imaging, Canadian Tire and the Otttawa Fire Stations. WOW! WOW! WOW!
We visited Gjoa Haven, Nunavut while cruising through the Northwest Passage. We were greeted by the elders an d school children and they performed songs and drum dancing for our group. It was magical. I walked through the community and I was taken by this little girl playing with a soccer ball and in particular the condition of the soccer ball. In that moment, I knew for sure that Project North was valuable and worthwhile for our northern communities!
Joan and I leave for Greenland, Nunavut and Nunavik with Adventure Canada on September 16th. We will look forward to blogging (hopefully) and sharing our stories with you when we return.
Stay tuned for more updates. Thank you again to everyone who has volunteered to help with the packing and for all the generous donations made to Project North!

"You have twigged my heart once again - how many days ago was that that we saw those delightful little girls skipping - is seems so long ago and yet so recent. I am having a difficult time adjusting to life at home - as I knew I would - how can one tell of the impact the North has to someone that has not seen or felt its charm?
Congratulations on the success of Project North - wish I could be there to help in person.
You are the best!!!!!"
